History of the Foundation for the Children of Haiti
Chapter 6 – 2001: The Children's Village
From very early days, Gladys and the Foundation's staff and board of directors dreamed of building a "Children's Village" – a campus consisting of children's residences, an elementary and secondary school, playground, playing fields, a chapel and a volunteers' residence.
In 1998 the first step toward this dream was taken as the Foundation purchased a 2.5 acre parcel of land in a safe and quiet neighbourhood near Hope Hospital and the rented houses for the Nursery and Hope Home.
Thanks to the generosity of our friends – particularly a relatively large legacy gift from the estate of a Canadian supporter – construction of the first building at the Village began in 2001. This beautiful two story building was completed in 2003
First building at the Children's Village
The construction of this building allowed the Foundation to move the Hope Home residents to the main floor of the new building, and the babies and toddlers living at the Rainbow of Love Nursery to the second floor, resulting in a number of significant benefits:
- The main floor was specifically designed with the special needs of the Hope Home residents in mind. This allowed the staff to significantly enhance the care provided to the children. After 10 years of making due in a house not suited to Hope Home's needs, this was a particular blessing for both the residents and staff.
- The second floor was likewise designed for the requirements of a home for 50 – 60 babies and toddlers, allowing for enhanced care of the Rainbow of Love children.
- A large paved area allowed the Hope Home residents to spend much of the time outdoors in their wheelchairs.
- Having both Hope Home and the Rainbow of Love Nursery in the same building significantly increased the efficiency of the operations, and meant that the Foundation no longer had rent payments to meet every month.
